Hyperhidrosis – Excessive Sweating

Hyperhidrosis is excessive sweating, particularly in the hands, feet or armpits. Those people with hyperhidrosis produce sweat in amounts far greater than needed to control their temperature, and this can have a major impact on quality of life. This can be embarrassing, can lead to unnecessary anxiety and stress and damage confidence. There are several treatments we can offer at the Canterbury Skin and Laser clinic to treat hyperhidrosis and help you to gain your confidence back.

BOTOX® TREATMENT FOR HYPERHIDROSIS

Botulinum Toxin treatment (Botox®)  is the recommended treatment for local hyperhidrosis such as the armpits, and by far the most effective, lasting 6-7 months on average. The Canterbury Skin and Laser Clinic offers Botox® treatment for excessive sweating. This long-lasting treatment only takes around 30 minutes, and simply involves the Botox® being injected into the skin using very tiny needles.

Botox®, when injected into the skin in small doses, blocks the nerves that supply the eccrine glands which will reduce the activity of the sweat glands to minimise sweating. Treatment for hyperhidrosis with botox® costs £600 for the first assessment and treatment, then £500 for the further treatments.

OTHER TREATMENTS FOR HYPERHIDROSIS

There are several other treatments, some of which you may have tried, however they do not have the same long-lasting results. These include:

  • Aluminium chloride: An active ingredient in some antiperspirants, aluminium chloride can be used in stronger solutions to treat hyperhidrosis. The effect is short lasting.
  • Iontophoresis: This is the passage of a weak electric current through a water bath – the area affected is immersed in the water and electrically-charged particles block the activity of the sweat glands. The effects last for 3-4 days but longer with repeated treatment.
  • Tablet medication: There are a number of tablets that sufferers of hyperhidrosis can take, however their side effects can be more troublesome for patients.
  • Surgery: Normally considered when other methods of treatment haven’t worked, surgery provides a permanent solution to treat hyperhidrosis; there are several types including excision, curettage and sympathectomy. However, the side effects can be potentially dangerous and the result may only be party effective.
