Acne and Acne Scarring in Canterbury

Acne is the most common skin condition in UK. It affects up to 80% of adolescents and 70% of people in their 20’s and 30’s. This stubborn condition is typically treated with oral and topical medications, which can produce good results but often with undesirable side effects.

Acne is caused by an excessive amount of oil production by the skin, blockage of the openings to the oil producing glands (resulting in tiny blackheads) and also due to a bacterium, Propionibacterium acnes (P. acnes) which causes inflammation in the blocked glands. These three factors seem to work together in order to produce the red and yellow spots so characteristic of acne. Occasionally these spots can develop into large cysts (so called nodular or cystic acne) which often results in scarring.

Acne can also leave scars which are permanent and are easier to prevent than to treat. Acne scarring can be improved by several methods, including Nlite to stimulate collagen production, fractional resurfacing laser, dermal fillers, subscision, punch excision & medical skin needling. Prevention of scarring is achievable as long as the treatment is started at an early stage.

At the Canterbury Skin and Laser Clinic, we offer a range of treatments specifically for those who suffer from acne or acne scars. We pride ourselves on our successful and comprehensive range of treatments and our Dermatologists will advise on the most appropriate option for you.

The AFT laser has been described as ‘the most significant advancement in acne treatment for over twenty years’ with the most impressive thing about it being its prolonged effect. Indeed, four out of five patients noticed a real improvement in their acne, and a quarter of the patients reported cure of the condition. A Laser is a high-energy beam of light that can transfer its energy into specific areas of the skin’s tissue to treat skin problems. The lasers work by killing the bacteria, and reduce the production of sebum from the sebaceous glands in the skin.

DERMALUX LED PHOTOTHERAPY TREATMENT

Dermalux Phototherapy is a multi award winning treatment with clinically proven results. It is a non-invasive and pain-free treatment option that is suitable for all skin types. It has proven results in the treatment of Acne, Rosacea, Pigmentation, skin rejuvenation and more. A course of treatment is advised.

MICRODERMABRASION

Medical microdermabrasion helps to improve the texture and appearance of skin using state-of-the-art technology to exfoliate, enhance and smooth the skin. It gets rid of unwanted acne and scarring by using a stream of fine micro-particles to partially remove the outermost layer and stimulate new cell growth, resulting in a smoother and more youthful glow. Not only does it work well for acne and acne scars, but it also reduces the appearance of wrinkles, age spots, sun damaged skin and stretch marks – to name a few! It’s a safe and effective procedure that is suitable for men and women of all ages and skin types.

CHEMICAL PEELS

There are three types of chemical peels that you can choose from: a superficial peel, a medium depth peel and a deep peel. They remove the outer layers of the skin but to variable depths to benefit an array of skin conditions. The superficial peel is the mildest form of chemical peel treatment available. It’s helpful in reducing oiliness, unblocking pore, reducing blackheads and minimising acne breakouts. They are performed by our Aestheticians.

Medium chemical peels are performed by our qualified medical skin specialists, and are effective in reducing the appearance of superficial acne scars, age spots, pigmentation and fine wrinkles.
Deep Peels are rarely performed due to the availability of other treatment options such as resurfacing lasers, pigment specific lasers etc.

MEDICAL SKIN NEEDLING

The Medical Skin Needling treatment we offer may be significantly more invasive than those offered in a beauty salon. DermaPen treatments can be used to improve the appearance of acne scars, as well as wrinkles, stretch marks, chicken pox scars and more. By using sterile micro-needles to make a multitude of tiny puncture wounds, derma roller treatment stimulates the production of new collagen and elastin. This will result in smoother, plumper and more youthful looking skin after the treatment is finished – whatever your skin type.

FRACTIONAL LASER RESURFACING

Sufferers of acne scars can also turn to laser resurfacing to rejuvenate their skin and get their confidence back. For fractional laser resurfacing, we use a non-ablative laser that delivers small micro-beams to the skin. It has a positive effect on wrinkles, sun damage and other blemishes as well as acne scars. With a small penetration to the skin, the laser will target problem areas by creating tiny columns of treated tissue amongst the healthy tissue to promote all-round healthy looking skin.

IPL

IPL, or intense pulsed light, treats redness and thread veins which can often be associated with acne and acne rosacea. IPLs work by producing a powerful light that destroys the bacteria that causes acne, as well as removing blood vessels that cause redness or thread veins. It’s a safe and non invasive treatment that is well tolerated. Whilst the process can help to alleviate acne, however is not suitable to all acne/ rosacea sufferers which is why it’s important to have an initial consultation and clinical assessment by a fully-qualified doctor or dermatologist.
