BOTOX®

Botox® (Botulinum Toxin) is a popular treatment for lines and wrinkle reduction. Botox® can be used as an anti-ageing treatment to reduce dynamic wrinkles such as frown lines, forehead lines and crows feet, but can also be used to treat excessive sweating and migraines and tension headaches. Botox® is a purified protein derived from a bacterium called Clostridium Botulinum and works to relax the muscles by preventing the never signals from reaching the muscles. There have been many clinical trials confirming the effectiveness and safety of Botox®, however it should only be administered by a trained medical professional in a Care Quality Commission approved facility, such as the Canterbury Skin and Laser Clinic.

The effects of botox® are not permanent, they typically last for four months before gradually wearing off so for the desired effect to be maintained, treatment needs to be repeated. Following treatment, you will be able to return to a normal work and social life immediately. Following Botox® treatment, you may see slight redness, bruising and swelling but this will settle in a few days. Drooping of the eyebrows or puffiness under eyes can also occur, but these will be considered during your consultation and risks minimised. In our experience, other side effects are very rare due to our highly-qualified medical skin specialists with many years experience. The Botox® effect is not immediate, but gradually takes effect over the first few days but can take up to 2 weeks to have its optimal effect.

If administered correctly, Botox® does not remove all facial expressions as sometimes depicted in the media. Our experienced team of dermatologists, cosmetic doctors and aesthetic nurses have been highly trained and will be able to fine tune the placement of the injections to give a natural expression rather than a frozen look. Botox® injections allow the precise and selective reduction in certain muscle movements, so the lines and wrinkles in these treated areas gradually soften resulting in a younger, fresher looking skin with fewer lines and wrinkles. The precise injection of the appropriate amount of Botox® is vitally important to ensure a good result with minimal risk.

NOSE AND CHIN RE-SHAPING USING BOTOX

Botox can be used to change the shape of the nose and the chin without the need for any invasive surgery.

Botox is injected around the nose to hide issues such as a crooked or bumpy nose and can also give the illusion that the nose is straighter and more defined. Traditional nose reshaping, or rhinoplasty, involves surgery which requires recovery and significant downtime. Using injectables to reshape the nose means that you can skip the pain and recovery and go back to normal daily activities almost immediately. Botox injections are not permanent and will require top ups to maintain the desired cosmetic result.

Botox can be used around the chin to create a more sculpted, youthful look without the need for more involved jaw reduction procedures. Botox can be injected to the muscle near the back of the jaw and it will slowly reduce in size which softens the appearance of a strong or square jawline. Dimpling or wrinkling around the chin can also be improved using these injections, as can a double chin which is caused by loose skin or sagging muscles.

BOTOX TREATMENT FOR CLENCHING OF THE JAW AND GRINDING OF THE TEETH

Teeth grinding and jaw clenching is known as bruxism and is often related to stress and anxiety. Many suffers experience facial pain and headaches as a result.

Injecting botox into the muscles which control the jaw can weaken and relax the muscles and prevent clenching and grinding of the jaw. This not only can reduce the facial pain and headaches but also protects the teeth from wear and tear. The effects can be seen for around 3-6 months and will be seen between 1-3 days following treatment.

DERMAL FILLERS

Dermal Fillers are the ideal treatment for instantly enhancing your looks in a completely natural way. They can be used to add volume and improve wrinkles, folds, thin lips and scars. They are most commonly used on the face, particularly the lips and cheeks, but are also commonly used on the hands and decolletage. Smokers’s lines, nasolabial lines, smile lines, crow’s feet and forehead wrinkles can all be treated using dermal fillers. They work from inside by adding volume and gently smoothing out lines, folds and wrinkles to restore the skin to its former youthful appearance.

Dermal fillers come in two main types. Hyaluronic Acid fillers and Non-Hyaluronic Acid fillers. The most popular dermal fillers, Restylane and Juvederm, are examples of Hyaluronic Acid fillers. Hyaluronic Acid is a natural substance, which is found in the skin. These dermal fillers are non-animal, stabilised and biodegradable. In the skin, collagen and hyaluronic acid work together to provide youthful resilience, texture and shape. Non-Hyaluronic Acid fillers include Radiesse+ which consists of Calcium Hydroxyapatite molecules which stimulate collagen production. Different combinations of types of fillers are used in order to achieve the best results and at the Canterbury Skin and Laser Clinic, the best treatment plan to achieve your desired result will be discussed with you.

Dermal fillers provide instant results as the product is placed into the skin using tiny anti-wrinkle injections. A treatment session typically takes about 30 minutes and most patients find the treatment very tolerable and virtually painless. However, the application of Emla topical anaesthetic cream is helpful if you are worried about the treatment. Hyaluronic acid dermal fillers on average have a duration of 8 to 12 months but can last up to 18 months in some people. Dermal fillers come in different thicknesses, making it a very versatile treatment to treat very fine lines, up to deep wrinkles and folds. Immediately after the treatment, there may be some redness, swelling, bruising and tenderness at the injection site but this will typically settle down within a day or so.

One of the most popular types of dermal filler treatment we offer are lip fillers. They are a dermal filler treatment in the lip and work to add volume to thin lips, correct uneven lip shape, smooth out smoker’s lines and we have also treated scars on the lips with dermal fillers. Find out more about our lip filler treatment here.

Dermal fillers and Botox® can be used to compliment each other. Microdermabrasion, laser rejuvenation and medical skin needling techniques can also be used to enhance the results from Botox® and dermal fillers treatment. During your consultation all treatment options will be discussed with you to achieve the best possible results.

ARE BOTOX® AND DERMAL FILLERS PAINFUL?

Most patients find the treatment very tolerable and virtually painless. Tiny needles are used to inject into the muscles, so only pin pricks may be felt. For those not so good with needles, local anaesthetic cream can be used beforehand, but this needs to be applied for at least 30 minutes for the numbing effect to occur. Following the treatment, there may be a little redness or bruising at the site of injections, which usually settles within 24-48 hours.

Lip filler treatment is not that painful. Of course, the discomfort level will mostly depend on your doctor’s technique and your own pain tolerance. At Canterbury Skin and Laser Clinic, we can apply a strong numbing cream that acts quickly or in some cases, a dental block can be offered. The lip filler even has a dose of the painkiller lidocaine mixed in the gel, which will further help to numb the area.

WHERE IS THE BEST PLACE TO HAVE BOTOX® OR DERMAL FILLERS?

The legislation in the UK for those offering injectable treatments is practically non-existent. You can go to a plastic surgeon, a dermatologist, a cosmetic doctor, a dentist, a nurse, and even a chiropodist or a beautician or indeed anyone who advertises the treatment! Non-medical practitioners definitely will not be able to look after you or prescribe if anything unexpected happens. What’s more, qualified experienced practitioners will be able to use an enzyme to dissolve the filler should that be advised. We recommend that you only go to qualified and, more importantly perhaps, experienced injectors.

At Canterbury Skin and Laser Clinic our team of dermatologists, cosmetic doctors and aesthetic nurses have been providing lip filler treatments for many years, are all qualified and very experienced with dermal filler treatments. All injectable aesthetic procedures should be performed in a clinical setting with aseptic techniques. We do not believe hairdressing salons or gyms or someone’s home offer this clinical standard. The Canterbury Skin and Laser Clinic being CQC regulated, ensures it has met the standard required for a medical clinic facility.
