Age spots, sometimes called liver spots are pigmented lesions which appear as brown marks on the skin, particularly on the hands and face. Although they are not harmful, many people wish to have them removed for cosmetic reasons. Age spots appear as a result of sun damage due to excess melanin or skin pigment. Areas of skin that have had frequent and prolonged sun exposure over many years may develop age spots, it is thought to be caused by excess exposure to UV (ultraviolet) light, which causes melanin (skin pigment) to be produced at high concentrations.

HOW ARE AGE SPOTS TREATED?
We offer simple and effective laser and IPL treatments to combat age spots and pigmented lesions. Both laser and IPL treatments provide visible results after just one treatment, and offer an alternative to the likes of microdermabrasion and chemical peels which are less effective in the treatment of age spots. IPL and lasers can treat a range of sun damage and pigmentation conditions including age spots, sun spots, liver spots, freckles and melasma. During your consultation at Canterbury Skin and Laser Clinic, your condition will be assessed and the most suitable treatment options discussed with you.
Treatments usually take between 15 and 30 minutes and can be described as feeling like a warm elastic band snapping against the skin. Lasers are more effective in treating age spots and pigmented lesions and can usually remove them in just one session. IPL however takes slightly longer, with treatment needing to be repeated every four weeks for a course of two-four sessions. Immediately after treatment, the treated area becomes darker, crusts and peels off over 1 to 2 weeks, leaving a pinkish area of new skin lasting several more weeks. Significant fading can continue for up to 6 months after treatment in some cases.

HOW TO MAINTAIN THE RESULTS OF AGE SPOT TREATMENT?
In order to maintain the results from the treatment, we recommend daily use of a broad-spectrum UVA and UVB sunscreen with a Sun Protection Factor (SPF) of at least 30, and to apply an antioxidant such as the SkinCeuticals CE Ferulic or Phloretin serums as the most effective way to protect the skin from future sun damage (photodamage).
